‘Our Streets’ campaign launches with day of action

LITTERBUGS and fly tippers are being targeted as part of a new campaign to clean up the streets and parks of Tameside.

Launching on Wednesday 10 August with a day of action in Ashton, Our Streets aims to bring Tameside Council and local communities together working to tidy the area so residents can continue to be proud of where they live.

On the day, officers patrolled town centre streets checking rubbish dumped on the streets and issuing 7 Fixed Penalty Notices where appropriate. They conducted 49 duty of care of care checks with Ashton businesses to ensure their rubbish is stored and disposed correctly. Additionally, the council will take further action and serve 3 land owners with Statutory Notes, where waste on their land needs to be cleared.

Work by officers on the day of action was a continuation of their regular work across the borough to keep streets cleared of rubbish and people illegally dumping waste prosecuted.

Whether it’s through organising community litter picks, sharing key messages to reduce pollution or campaigning against inconsiderate parking, Our Streets will help unite people to make a difference.

Everyone has a responsibility for their surroundings and behaviour and through the Our Streets campaign communities can come together with Tameside Council and contribute to improving their areas and sharing in this success.

Cllr Vimal Choksi, Tameside Council executive member for Town and Communities, said: “We all want to live and work in an area where our families and vulnerable people are secure and our streets and parks are spotless. Through Our Streets we can team together to utilise our strengths and resources and take pride in our neighbourhood.”

Cllr Denise Ward, Tameside Council executive member for Environmental Services, said: “Through this campaign our officers and local community will work hand in hand to clean and refresh the local area we’re all exceptionally proud of. Our teams will head to streets across the borough to remove rubbish, while also supporting residents who want to get involved. This could be by joining a community clean-up or litter pick, reporting fly tipping or getting in touch about litter problems and dog fouling.”
